Paving stone laying

Paving in Tallinn and Harjumaa

Laying paving stones without or with a curb is a task that requires patience and precision. Properly laid material will perfectly fulfill its function and become a durable, durable decoration of the site. In principle, you can carry out the process yourself, but it is better to entrust the matter to professionals. In case of mistakes, financial losses will be quite significant, not to mention the time spent.

The paving stones are only part of the “puzzle” that will have to be put together. Certain tools and materials will be needed. It is worth preparing them in advance. All this will ultimately affect the cost. Also, do not forget to check the condition of the purchased goods before starting work, i.e. whether there are no chips and cracks on it.

Laying paving stones in your yard or other chosen location will require:

  • Materials for the substrate – preferably crushed stone from road or concrete aggregate, possibly coarse gravel (approximately 300 kg per square meter of surface).
  • Materials for making the bedding (it should be about 5 cm thick).
  • Sand and cement (should be bought in advance, as they will be needed when installing curbs).
  • Geotextile if the terrain is wet.
  • Optional water drainage elements if the surface requires surface drainage.

Paving work will require a shovel, rake, wheelbarrow, tamping machine, tape measure, level, track marking rope and reinforcing rods if you plan to work on a small area. Laying paving stones in the yard - algorithm of actions

Paving stone is a popular and practical material for paving paths, grounds and yards. It is characterized by strength, durability and aesthetic appearance.

How the process works:

  1. Surface marking and design. Laying of paving stones on the pavement or other technology, it is best to start with the preparation of a project, especially if the work will be carried out on an irregularly shaped plot. The design does not necessarily have to be professional and detailed. It is important to be able to note the dimensions of the surface and the length of the edges. Before starting work, determine the size of the surface to be worked on. Pegs/metal rods and strong rope or fishing line are good for this purpose.
  2. Trenching. This involves removing soil from the designated area where the paving stones will eventually be laid. If you use professional equipment for this purpose, the task is greatly simplified. True price per job will increase. Otherwise, the work will have to be done manually. The layer of soil to be removed is 10-20 cm. However, if a passenger car access road is being prepared, the depth of the trench should be increased by another 10-20 cm. Deeper excavation – about 50 cm – will also be required in wet and clay areas, as well as when constructing access roads for heavier equipment, such as agricultural machinery. All this will have an impact on the cost of the work per square meter. The bottom of the excavation must be leveled to take into account possible changes in the shape of the surface.
  3. Installation of curbs. They give shape to the path, protect the surface from soil contamination from the unpaved part and prevent the paving stones from “spreading” apart. For the durability of the surface, install the edges on a base of semi-dry concrete to a depth of about 10 cm. A laser level is useful for horizontal alignment of the curbs.
  4. Creation of the base layer. However, the work begins when the borders are ready – after the concrete has set. Cover the edges with native soil on the outside and a layer of aggregate on the inside. The thickness of the aggregate layer will depend on the depth of the pad, the type of soil and the expected surface load. In case of high moisture content, you should pre stack geotextile. It is usually assumed that the depth of the underground part is 10-15 cm. At the end it is important to compact the aggregate, preferably with a vibrating device.
  5. Backfill made of sift, crushed stone (1-4 mm), sand (fraction up to 2 mm) or cement-sand mixture in a ratio of 1:4. In the latter case, the cement will bind the grains of sand, thus protecting them from being washed out by water. The thickness of the bedding is usually about 4-5 cm. Do not forget to level the base layer, but do not tamp or crumble it.
  6. Laying paving stones on silt. Now it is time to lay paving stones. The principles applied here are similar to the brick laying methods. Therefore, one row of cubes should be offset about half the distance from the other. Lay the cubes tightly, one next to the other, and tamp them well into the bedding.

Work turnkey involves tamping the material and filling the joints with quartz sand.
